MEMBERS of the Vihiga county government executive committee have been asked to apply for loans to buy their personal cars. Governor Moses Akaranga yesterday told the committee members purchasing cars for themselves is part of their "personal development".
"Let them apply for loans, buy for their vehicles and repay within five years so that when they leave service they go away with their cars instead of leaving them here," he said.
Last week, Akaranga rejected a Sh 250 million budget allocation passed by the county assembly for the purchase of cars for themselves, the executives and public service board members. Akaranga saidthe cars are not his government's priority.
The governor said he is comfortable using a private number plate on his official vehicle. "I am a servant of the people and I do not see the need to be treated differently from them," he said. Akaranga has also declined the construction of an official residence for him saying he has a home.
